There are many standards that could apply to each product but which are the most appropriate? Which are those recognised by your customers?
In a number of instances standards can be quoted within regulations as a means of demonstrating compliance.

Standards are not set in stone and many undergo constant revision. Indeed the rules for standardisation require that they be reviewed at regular intervals to confirm their continuing relevance.

This revision process focuses on the National Committees; BSI within the UK.
The membership of BSI committees is made up with representatives from government, manufacturers, users, testers and other interested parties. Many of the standards in use today are based on International Standards. This helps in limiting the growth of regional standards that may be applicable to only a limited number of countries. It also helps to reduce some of the work load as the major activity is carried out on an international front. It is normal in many areas for this work to them be presented to Europe for possible adoption as a European Standard.

Most of the early work in developing and amending standards is included in the final document. It is therefore vitally important to input your company views at that stage and then to continue your involvement. This can be a time consuming activity and clear understanding of the processes is needed.

Ian Andrews can help you by representing your company interest at any of your  Trade Association meetings and on the appropriate standards making committees.
